About NCPRD

Background and Mandate of
NCPRD.

The National Centre for Petroleum Research and Development (NCPRD) is one of the three energy research centres established by the Federal Government of Nigeria at the instance of the Energy commission of Nigeria (ECN) on 28'' July, 2008. The Centre is located in the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi and is being funded presently by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). The Administrative structure of the Centre consists of a Governing Board, Technical Advisor Committee, Director, an Administrative Secretary and a Finance Officer. The Director is the Chief Research/Academic/Administrative, as well as the Accounting Officer of the Centre. The Vice Chancellor of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi is the Chairman of the Governing Board.

Mandate of NCPRD


The Centre is charged with the responsibility of organizing research in fossil fuel energies. The Centre, therefore, is to perform the following functions:


• Serve as a Centre for research and training of high level manpower in petroleum and other fossil fuel technologies, including clean coal technology.

• Research into environmental problems associated with exploitation, transportation and utilization of petroleum and other fossil fuel resources.

• Serve as a resource centre offering advisory and research facilities to government, public and private players in the petroleum and other fossil fuel industries.

• Collaborate with similar institutions and organizations engaged in petroleum and other fossil fuel researches in Nigeria and overseas for collaborative research.

• Serve as a Centre for the study of fuel petroleum products and other fossil fuels demand and supply.

• Serve as a Centre for equipment development for petroleum and other fossil fuel exploration and exploitation.

• Disseminate the results of Research and Development (R&D) through public awareness programmes such as seminars, conferences, publications, mass media, etc.

• Perform any other functions, as may be directed by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
